Westerton Bed and Breakfast

location of westerton

Westerton Bed and Breakfast is located in the town of Callander, next to Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park. This national park was the first one established in Scotland, in 2002, showing how recently Scotland started officially designating some of its beautiful countryside as national parks!

Callander is a quaint town with a main street that is walkable from Westerton B&B and has a number of restaurants, grocery stores, and the like. During our two nights there, we ate at two utterly spectacular restaurants that exceeded our expectations of a small town. You can read more about our recommendations for The Potting Shed at Roman Camp Hotel and Callander Meadows on our Scotland Food + Drink blog.

Callander is situated right at the transition from the Lowlands to the Highlands of Scotland, and the town is often referred to as the “gateway to the Highlands”. The fault boundary line that runs through the area and separates the Lowlands from Highlands creates some pretty scenery in the area and leads to pretty hiking opportunities. Loch Lomond has been a popular vacation destination since at least the Victorian Era and inspired some of Sir Walter Scott’s writings.

The town is about an hour outside of Edinburgh and 20 minutes from Stirling. Because of its proximity to Edinburgh, we were able to use this as our last stop before heading to the airport, a much better option than staying in an airport motel, which is often how we end our trips!

the hosts

Delicious coffee and shortbread cookies were a wonderful treat after a long drive. We loved the creatively interlocked teacups!

Owners and hosts, Mike and Lesley, have lived in this Victorian home since 1998 and opened it as a B&B in 2002. They were incredibly friendly and tuned in to our needs as travelers. When we first arrived after a long day’s drive, Lesley offered us coffee and tea and served it on lovely Wedgwood china with delicious shortbread cookies in the breakfast room.

Since the B&B is on the town’s main road and has a wall between the yard and the street, there is limited visibility when pulling out of the driveway in a car. Mike was always aware of when we were headed out and helpfully came out to stand out in the street and gesture to us when it was safe to pull out - a very kind and considerate touch!

We were also incredibly grateful for the information provided in our rooms and directly by Mike and Lesley regarding local dining. We made reservations at a couple of the places they recommended and were totally wowed by the meals.

Behind the home is an extensive lawn and garden that eventually meets up with the river that runs through the town of Callander. At mid-summer, which is when we were there, the flowers were blooming and in full display. Because of our relatively short time in the area, we did not have a chance to wander in the yard, but that alone would be a wonderful addition to anyone’s stay here.

the rooms

Westerton B&B offers only three bedrooms - the Blue, Green, and Gold rooms, all located on the second floor of the house and all with super king-sized beds.

Our party of two couples stayed in the Green Room (facing out the front of the house) and the Gold Room (facing the gardens and river out back). The rooms all had ensuite bathrooms and were quite large, spacious, and beautifully decorated and cared for. The rooms have mini fridges, and the hosts kindly provided some basics like milk for coffee.

One of the favorite features of our room (the Green Room) was the interior shutters on the large windows that contributed to the charm of the room and house. Everything about the room felt comfortable and luxurious all at once!

the breakfast

We had two mornings at Westerton Bed & Breakfast. On the second morning, we had an earlier start than when breakfast is normally served since we had to get to the airport in Edinburgh for our return flights. Mike and Lesley were very accommodating in preparing a lighter breakfast for us to eat earlier.

On our first morning when we got the full breakfast experience, we were treated with a buffet that included cereal, homemade yogurt with fresh fruit, poached pears, and more. We had all selected our main entrees the night before. Half of our group had a full Scottish breakfast, the other half had a salmon and scrambled egg tower on toast. Both were hearty, filling, and presented beautifully.

With a well kept and beautifully landscaped yard, just relaxing on the grounds of the Westerton B&B could have been a vacation in and of itself.

We feel that there was so much more to do in the area than our short stay permitted. We hope to return to Callander some day, and if we do, we will absolutely book at Westerton Bed & Breakfast again!
